Build a Home Sandblasting Cabinet for Metal Prep, Rust Removal, and Paint Stripping
This site's DIY powder coating and anodizing guides both assume clean, properly prepped bare metal as a starting point, and the aluminum sand casting guide produces rough-cast parts that need cleanup before finishing. What none of them cover is how to actually get there: stripping rust, old paint, and casting sand or flash cleanly and consistently. A benchtop sandblast cabinet is the tool that closes that gap — contained media blasting that strips a part to bright metal in minutes without the mess (or media reclaim headache) of open blasting, and small enough to live in a home shop rather than requiring a dedicated blast room.
Kit Cabinet vs Building From Scratch
A benchtop cabinet is one of the rare cases on this site where buying a pre-built kit and upgrading its weak points is more sensible than building the enclosure from scratch — the cabinet itself is just a sealed steel box with glove ports, a viewing window, and a media hopper, and commodity kits at the 20-gallon size are inexpensive relative to the sheet metal and gasket work of building an equivalent enclosure yourself. Where the stock kits consistently fall short is air supply sizing, dust control, and the gloves/window, which is exactly what this build addresses.
Air Supply: The Part Most People Undersize
This is the single biggest reason a new sandblast cabinet feels underpowered out of the box. Media blasting is genuinely air-hungry — a typical benchtop siphon gun consumes 4-8 CFM continuously at 90 PSI, and most hobby-grade compressors (especially small pancake units sized for framing nailers or tire inflation) can't sustain that without the tank draining faster than the compressor refills it, causing pressure to sag mid-blast and media flow to sputter. Size the compressor to your gun's continuous CFM draw, not just its tank size — a bigger tank buys you longer bursts between refills, but a compressor with too low a CFM rating will bog down on any blast run longer than a few seconds regardless of tank size.

- Assemble the cabinet per its included instructions, paying particular attention to the media hopper and gun assembly — these arrive loosely fitted on most budget kits and benefit from a check of every fitting with an adjustable wrench before first use.
- Immediately swap the stock gloves and viewing window for the upgraded replacements from the parts list. Stock gloves on budget cabinets are usually the first failure point (a torn glove mid-blast sends abrasive media directly at your hand), and stock windows haze and pit quickly under aluminum oxide media, which is the highest-value cheap upgrade on the whole build.
- Install an inline air filter/moisture trap between the compressor and the cabinet's air inlet. Moisture in the air line clumps media and causes inconsistent, sputtering blast patterns — this single fitting solves the most common "my blaster keeps clogging" complaint.
- Connect the cabinet's dust port to a shop vac or dedicated dust collector. Even in a sealed cabinet, fine media dust escapes through the glove ports and hopper seams over time; active extraction keeps visibility through the window and keeps blast dust out of the shop air.
- Mount the clamp work light to illuminate the interior through the top or side, since the viewing window alone is rarely bright enough to see fine detail on a dark part.

Safety
Wear the P100 respirator whenever the cabinet is open for loading or unloading parts, even though the cabinet itself is sealed during blasting — fine media dust settles inside and becomes airborne again the moment you open the door. Never blast media containing silica sand; silica dust causes silicosis with repeated exposure and is why aluminum oxide, glass bead, and synthetic media have effectively replaced it for hobby use. Keep the cabinet in a well-ventilated area regardless of dust collection, and route the shop vac or collector exhaust away from your immediate work area. Check gloves for pinholes before each session, and never bypass the interlock or run the gun with the door/glove ports open.
