Buying and Refurbishing Used Shop Equipment: What to Check and How to Bring It Back to Life
Buying used equipment is one of the best ways to get real capability into a home shop without paying new prices — but it's also easy to end up with someone else's expensive problem. This covers what to actually check before buying, and how to bring a used tool back to a genuinely reliable state once it's home.
Where to Look
- Facebook Marketplace / Craigslist — the largest pool of listings, most negotiable pricing, most variability in seller knowledge and honesty
- Estate sales — genuinely good source for well-maintained older equipment, often from someone who cared for it for decades; less negotiable but less risky
- Auction sites (GovDeals, industrial auctions) — can be excellent value on commercial-grade equipment, but usually sold completely as-is with no ability to test beforehand
- Local maker/hobbyist groups — often the best combination of trustworthy sellers and realistic pricing, since reputation within a community matters
What to Check Before Buying — By Tool Category

- Refusal to let you test it running, when testing would otherwise be reasonable — a legitimate seller usually wants to demonstrate the thing works
- Cracks in cast iron or aluminum structural parts — cosmetic rust and wear are normal and fixable; structural cracks generally aren't worth the tool regardless of price
- "Just needs a little work" with no specifics — ask exactly what work, and factor real repair cost/time into whether the deal is actually good
Negotiating and Closing the Deal
- Research recent sold listings (not just asking prices) for the same model to know real market value before you show up
- Bring cash for private sales — it's a genuine negotiating advantage and avoids payment complications
- For anything with an engine or motor, ask to see/hear it run before finalizing, even if it means a slightly awkward "can you plug it in" moment
- Factor transport into your budget and plan — a great deal on a full-size CNC router that requires renting a truck and two extra people isn't as great once that's accounted for
Bringing It Home: The Refurb Checklist
- Deep clean before anything else — years of dust, swarf, and old lubricant hide the actual condition of components underneath; you can't properly evaluate a machine until it's clean
- Replace all consumables on principle — belts, bearings if remotely questionable, any rubber components that may have degraded from age even if not from use
- Re-lubricate everything per the manufacturer's spec — old grease/oil breaks down over time even without use; don't assume "it still moves" means the lubrication is still doing its job
- Check and re-torque all fasteners — vibration and years of use loosen things gradually; a full pass with the correct torque spec catches issues before they become failures
- Calibrate from scratch — don't trust the previous owner's calibration/settings; re-home, re-level, re-calibrate as if it were brand new, since transport alone can shift settings
- Update firmware/software if applicable — but research first, since some older machines run specific firmware versions that newer updates may not support well
When Professional Servicing Is Worth It
For anything involving a CO2 laser tube, complex electronics you're not confident diagnosing, or safety-critical components (table saw blade guards, machine E-stops), a one-time professional inspection/service call is often worth the cost relative to the risk of missing something on a machine you'll be trusting with fingers nearby. This is especially true for a first used-machine purchase, before you've built up the experience to confidently self-diagnose issues.
A well-chosen used machine, properly refurbished, can genuinely outperform a cheap new one — but the "properly refurbished" part is doing real work in that sentence, not optional.
