From Download to First Print: Complete Beginner Workflow
Where to Find Models Printables (printables.com) — Prusa's platform. High-quality curation, active community, free. Thingiverse (thingiverse.com) — the original, largest library. Quality varies. Still the most referenced. Thangs (thangs.com) — searches across multiple platforms simultaneously. Cults3D (cults3d.com) — mix of free and paid designs, many professional designers. MakerWorld (makerworld.com) — Bambu Lab's platform. Best Bambu Studio integration. Evaluating a Model Before Downloading Check: Makes count (how many people actually printed it), comments (recent ones flag known issues), file format (STL is universal, 3MF includes slicer settings), and design intent (a bracket designed for M3 screws will not fit M4). Orienting for Strength FDM parts are strongest along X/Y (within a layer) and weakest in Z (between layers). Orient so the primary stress direction aligns with X/Y, not Z. For quality: most visible face up (away from bed) for cleanest surface, or vertical for no visible layer lines on that face. Essential Slicer Settings for a First Print Slicing Checklist Before Export After clicking Slice: scrub through the layer preview. Check layer 1 (coverage), support placement (where expected), and whether thin walls slice correctly. Verify the print time estimate is reasonable for the model size. Starting the Print Before starting: 1. Clean bed with IPA (skin oils are the most common adhesion failure cause) 2. Verify filament is loaded and extruding cleanly 3. Clear any previous print remnants from the nozzle 4. Frame the job if your software/printer supports it Stay for the first 3-5 minutes. Watch: First layer quality — adjust Z live if not sticking No spaghetti — print detaching and being dragged around No extruder clicking — indicates a jam or underextrusion Post-Processing Removal: let fully cool before removing. PEI releases cleanly when cold. Forcing a hot print can damage the surface. Sanding: 120 → 220 → 400 grit for smooth finish. Wet sand 400+ grit for best results. Painting: filler primer first. Acrylic paints. Clear coat to protect.
