How to Unclog a Hardened Steel Nozzle Without a Cold Pull Hardened steel nozzles don't respond well to cold pulls (the process that works great on brass). Here's how to clear a clog without damaging your nozzle. Diagnosing the Clog Method 1 — Heat Soak and Manual Push 1. Heat nozzle to 20°C above normal print temp (e.g., 250°C for PLA) 2. Let it soak for 5 minutes — this softens any hardened material 3. Manually push filament through with your fingers 4. If it moves, extrude 100 mm at 1 mm/s 5. Repeat if necessary Method 2 — Atomic/Nylon Cold Pull (Works on Hardened Steel) Use nylon filament specifically — it works for cold pulls unlike PLA: 1. Load nylon filament 2. Heat to 250°C, extrude until nylon comes out clean 3. Cool to 90–95°C while maintaining slight forward tension 4. At 90°C, pull firmly and steadily — nylon should come out like a plug 5. Inspect the tip — if clean, clog is clear Method 3 — Acupuncture Needle While Hot 1. Heat nozzle to maximum temp 2. Insert a 0.35 mm acupuncture needle from the tip 3. Work it gently to break up the blockage 4. Extrude to clear Method 4 — Remove and Clean 1. Heat nozzle to print temp 2. Remove nozzle with wrench while hot 3. Soak in acetone (for ABS/ASA clogs) or burn with torch 4. Clear with needle 5. Reinstall hot Preventing Clogs Purge before color changes — especially light to dark Don't let nozzle idle at temperature for >30 min Cut filament cleanly before inserting into extruder Dry hygroscopic filaments before printing
