# Laser Engraver Safety: Ventilation, Eye Protection, and Fire Prevention
Diode lasers like the Ray5 20W are powerful tools that require real safety precautions. Burns happen fast, fumes can be toxic, and fires do occur.
## Eye Protection
The Ray5 20W emits in the **450 nm (blue) range** at up to 20 watts. Even diffuse reflections can cause permanent eye damage in milliseconds.
**Required:** OD4+ laser safety glasses rated for 400–500 nm wavelength. Cheap tinted glasses sold with laser kits do NOT provide adequate protection.
Look for OD ≥ 4+, ANSI Z136 or EN 207 compliance, wavelength range covering your laser. For blue diode lasers: orange-tinted OD5+ glasses work.
## Ventilation
Burning materials releases fumes ranging from unpleasant to carcinogenic:
- Wood: smoke and VOCs
- Acrylic: acrylic acid vapors — toxic
- Leather: protein fumes, chromium compounds — toxic
- PVC (NEVER cut): hydrogen chloride gas — extremely hazardous
**Minimum setup:** Blower fan for air assist + fume extraction hose ducted outside. Not just a fan in the room.
## Fire Prevention
- Never leave the machine unattended during a job
- Keep a CO2 or dry powder fire extinguisher within arm's reach
- Clear debris from the bed before each job
- Keep materials flat to prevent movement into the laser path
