CNC Routing: Optimizing Chip Load for 6061 Aluminum
Understanding Chip Load
Chip load is the actual thickness of the material removed by each flute of your cutting tool per revolution. For the WolfPawn 4040 Pro cutting 6061 aluminum, maintaining the correct chip load is the difference between clean chips and a broken end mill.
The Calculation
Use the formula: Feed Rate = RPM × Flute Count × Chip Load. For a 1/8" (3.175mm) 2-flute carbide end mill in aluminum, aim for a chip load between 0.001" and 0.002".
Practical Settings
1. **Spindle Speed:** 18,000 RPM. 2. **Feed Rate:** Approximately 36-40 IPM. 3. **Depth of Cut (DOC):** 0.2mm to 0.5mm per pass for stability. 4. **Coolant:** Use a mist system or WD-40 to prevent galling.
