Ender 3 Max Neo + Sonic Pad + Creality Camera: Complete First-Time Setup & Maintenance Guide
Complete first-time setup guide for the Ender 3 Max Neo with a Creality Sonic Pad and camera: firmware flashing, Wi-Fi, calibration, your first print, and an ongoing maintenance schedule. Handing off a printer to someone who's never used one is a great way to get them hooked — or a great way to get a panicked text three days later. This guide is written so someone with zero 3D printing experience can go from box to first successful print without guessing.
What You're Working With
- Ender 3 Max Neo — the printer. It ships with a CR Touch auto bed-leveling sensor already installed.
- Sonic Pad — a separate touchscreen controller that replaces the printer's stock controller. It runs Klipper firmware, which is faster than stock Marlin and adds Wi-Fi printing, a live camera feed, and cloud slicing.
- Creality Camera (webcam / Smart Kit camera) — plugs into the Sonic Pad via USB for remote print monitoring.
Order of operations matters: printer physical check → Sonic Pad firmware flash → Sonic Pad Wi-Fi → camera → first calibration print.

1. Physical Printer Setup
- Assemble the printer per the included manual if it isn't already put together.
- Make sure the frame sits flat on the table and doesn't rock.
- Check the X and Y belts — snug, not guitar-string tight, not sagging.
- Clean the bed surface with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and a paper towel to remove oils from handling.
- Power on with the stock screen first, before ever touching the Sonic Pad. Home all axes and run auto bed leveling from the printer's own menu. If that works, the hardware is mechanically sound and ready to convert to Sonic Pad control.
2. Flashing Sonic Pad Firmware onto the Printer
The Sonic Pad needs the printer's mainboard running special Klipper-compatible firmware, loaded via USB stick — not just through the Sonic Pad screen alone.
- On the Sonic Pad, tap the "+" (add printer) button.
- Select model family "Ender" → then "Ender-3 Max Neo" specifically. Picking the wrong sub-model can prevent the printer from booting (recoverable, but avoid it — double-check before continuing).
- The Sonic Pad generates a firmware file and prompts you to copy it to a USB stick (FAT32 formatted).
- Power the printer off, insert the stick into the printer's mainboard slot (not the Sonic Pad), then power on.
- You'll see a progress bar on the printer's own screen, then it goes blank except for a Creality logo. This is expected — once Sonic Pad firmware is loaded, the printer's own screen is no longer used. All control now happens on the Sonic Pad.
- Power off, remove the USB stick, then connect the Sonic Pad to the printer's mainboard with the supplied cable. The Ender 3 Max Neo ships with either a GD32F303 or STM32F103-based board — the Sonic Pad matches the correct config automatically once connected.
- Power the printer back on with the Sonic Pad attached. It should detect and connect automatically.
3. Sonic Pad Wi-Fi & Basic Setup
- On first boot the Sonic Pad prompts for Wi-Fi — use a 2.4GHz network for the most reliable connection.
- Set a printer name so it's identifiable if more printers are added later.
- Go to Settings → Advanced Options and enable IoT / Creality Cloud for remote monitoring away from home. This requires a free Creality Cloud account.
- Note the Sonic Pad's IP address (Settings → Network) — it's used to reach the built-in Fluidd web interface from any browser on the same network at http://<sonic-pad-ip>.
4. Camera Setup
- Plug the Creality camera's USB cable into a USB port on the Sonic Pad (not the printer).
- On the Sonic Pad: Settings → Camera — select the connected camera from the list.
- Confirm the live feed appears on the Sonic Pad home screen during a print.
- To view remotely on the same network from a browser: http://<sonic-pad-ip>/webcam/?action=stream
- For viewing from outside the house, use the Creality Cloud app (requires IoT enabled above) and pair the printer via the QR code in Sonic Pad settings.
If the camera shows "connected" but no video, this is a known issue with some Creality webcam units — try a different USB port on the Sonic Pad, and power-cycle the Sonic Pad after plugging the camera in rather than hot-plugging it.
5. First Calibration (Don't Skip This)
- Run Auto Home from the Sonic Pad (all axes move to origin).
- Run Auto Bed Leveling — uses the CR Touch probe to map the bed, takes a few minutes.
- Run a Z-offset calibration using the paper-test method: lower the nozzle onto a piece of paper at bed height and adjust until there's slight drag.
- Load filament using the Sonic Pad's Load Filament menu, which heats the nozzle and feeds it through automatically. Start with PLA — the most forgiving material, no enclosure or high heat required.
6. Slicing & Sending the First Print
Three options, easiest first:
- Easiest — Creality Cloud Slicing: browse a free model in the Sonic Pad's built-in library and tap print; slicing happens automatically in the cloud.
- Recommended long-term — Creality Print (free desktop app): add the Ender-3 Max Neo profile, slice an .STL, and either send it directly over the network to the Sonic Pad or save the .gcode to a USB stick.
- Alternative: upload a pre-sliced .gcode file directly through the Fluidd web interface at http://<sonic-pad-ip>.
For the very first print, use a small, well-known test model (a calibration cube or a benchy) before attempting anything large.

- Printer mainboard firmware: only needs re-flashing if switching to a new Sonic Pad-compatible version or changing printer models on the same Sonic Pad. Leave it alone otherwise.
- Creality Print (slicer): auto-prompts for updates; keep it current for the latest printer profiles.
- Camera: no separate firmware — plug-and-play USB device.
Check release notes before updating — occasionally a Sonic Pad firmware update changes the underlying Klipper/Moonraker/Fluidd versions together, which can require re-doing the printer connection step above if something breaks. It's uncommon, but worth knowing going in.
9. Common First-Time Problems
- Printer screen goes blank after firmware flash — expected. Control everything from the Sonic Pad now.
- Sonic Pad won't detect the printer — check the connecting cable at both ends; re-seat it with both devices powered off.
- First layer not sticking — redo the Z-offset calibration and clean the bed with isopropyl alcohol.
- Camera shows "connected" but no image — try a different USB port on the Sonic Pad, then power-cycle it.
- Wrong printer model selected during firmware flash — go back into Settings → Printer, re-select the correct model, and re-flash. This doesn't damage anything, it just needs correcting.
- Filament grinding or clicking at the extruder — usually a partial clog or tangled spool; back off the filament, cut the end at an angle, and reload.
