Resin 3D Printing Troubleshooting: Common Defects, Causes, and Fixes
FDM printing on this site has a dedicated troubleshooting reference for stringing, warping, and layer problems, but resin printing has never gotten the same treatment — our resin beginner guide covers setup and safety, and exposure calibration covers dialing in a new resin, but neither is built as a symptom-first reference for when a print comes off the plate wrong. MSLA/resin failure modes are different enough from FDM's that "just look at the FDM troubleshooting guide" doesn't actually help — this fills that gap.
Failed Bed Adhesion / Print Falls Off the Build Plate

Resin prints fail layer-to-layer, not layer-to-plate, when successive layers don't bond — the cured resin from one layer needs enough exposure overlap with the next to chemically fuse rather than just sit adjacent to it.
- Cause: normal (non-bottom) layer exposure time too low. This is the single most common cause — every layer needs enough UV exposure to both cure through its own thickness and slightly into the layer below it. Run (or re-run) the exposure test grid from our exposure calibration guide rather than guessing at a fix.
- Cause: resin temperature too low. Cold resin (common in an unheated garage in winter) cures more slowly and less completely at a given exposure time than the same resin at room temperature — either warm the resin/room, or increase exposure time to compensate, and expect to recalibrate exposure seasonally if your print space isn't temperature-controlled.
- Cause: a partially expired or contaminated resin bottle. Resin does degrade over time, especially once opened and exposed to light and air repeatedly — a bottle well past its shelf life can need meaningfully more exposure than a fresh one from the same product line.
Surface and Cosmetic Defects

- Support marks tearing chunks out of the surface on removal. Support contact points sized too large for the surface, or removed before the part is fully cured — let prints reach full post-cure hardness before removing supports, and use smaller contact tip diameters on cosmetically visible surfaces.
- Thin details (weapons, antennae, fine miniature parts) snapping during printing or washing. Under-supported thin geometry — add more support points along the length of thin features, not just at the tip, and handle wet, uncured prints gently since resin is at its weakest before final cure.
- Warping on large flat panels. Internal stress from uneven cure across a large flat area — angle large flat parts at 15-30° off the build plate rather than printing them dead flat, which is standard practice specifically to avoid this and also improves layer adhesion via the angled cross-section.
Print-Wide Failures

Every troubleshooting step above involves handling uncured resin at some point — wear nitrile gloves (not latex, which resin degrades) whenever touching wet prints, the vat, or the FEP film, and work with adequate ventilation. Most resin printing problems trace back to one of three root causes once you've ruled out mechanical issues: exposure time not matched to your specific resin and layer height, resin temperature drifting outside what your calibration assumed, or supports under-built for the part's geometry. Keeping a documented, calibrated exposure profile per resin (rather than trusting generic slicer presets) and re-validating it seasonally if your print space isn't temperature-controlled eliminates the majority of these failures before they happen.
