How to Calibrate a Laser Engraver for Different Materials Every new material needs calibration — there's no universal power/speed setting that works across wood types, acrylics, leathers, and coatings. This guide walks through the structured approach to finding settings fast. Why You Need Calibration Even within one material category, variation is huge: Pine engraves at different depths than oak at the same power Different acrylic brands cut at different speeds Painted surfaces need different power than bare material Humidity affects wood burn depth Calibration test grids give you a visual map of the power/speed envelope so you can pick the right settings once and know why they work. The Power/Speed Test Grid This is the core calibration tool. It runs a matrix of small squares at different power and speed combinations and burns them onto a sample of the actual material you'll be using. In LightBurn 1. Edit → Material Test (or use the built-in Material Test Generator) 2. Set the grid: - Rows: Power (e.g., 20% to 100% in steps of 10%) - Columns: Speed (e.g., 100mm/min to 1000mm/min in steps of 100) 3. Set square size: 10×10mm gives readable results 4. Set the material type: Fill for engraving, Line for cutting 5. Frame first to confirm fit on material 6.
