Surfacing and Truing Your Spoilboard on the Wolfpawn 4040 Pro A flat spoilboard is the foundation of accurate CNC work. Over time the spoilboard (waste/sacrificial bed) gets gouged and uneven. Surfacing it takes 10 minutes and immediately improves cut consistency. Why It Matters The Wolfpawn's spoilboard is MDF. It wears, compresses, gets cut into, and warps slightly with humidity changes. An uneven spoilboard means: Inconsistent Z depth across the work area Parts that aren't flat — one edge deeper than the other V-carve that varies in width across large designs What You Need A surfacing bit (fly cutter) or large end mill — 1/4" (6.35mm) flat end mill works A sacrificial MDF spoilboard (the one you're going to surface) ~20 minutes The Surfacing Toolpath in Aspire 1. Open Vectric Aspire 2. Set job size to your full work area: 400 × 400mm 3. Create a Pocket toolpath covering the full area 4. Bit: 1/4" flat end mill 5. Settings: 6. Machine in both X and Y passes for better flatness Running the Surface 1. Do not re-zero Z after any recent Z adjustment — surface relative to current Z 2. Home machine, set work zero to spoilboard corner 3. Z zero at the highest point of the spoilboard (usually center or front) 4. Run toolpath — it will skim across the entire surface 5. After: run a second pass offset 90° if you have time Depth of Cut First surfacing: 0.5mm to remove most gouges Maintenance surfacing: 0.2–0.3mm to true up Limit: don't go below 10mm total spoilboard thickness (replace before then) After Surfacing 1. Vacuum all MDF dust — it's toxic 2. Check flatness with a straightedge — should be flat to within 0.1–0.2mm 3. Re-mark your fixture hole locations if you use them 4. Note: MDF absorbs moisture — resurface if machine was stored in humid conditions Frequency
