CNC: Safe Feed Speeds for Small Bits
Avoiding 1/8" Bit Breakage Small bits (1/8" or 3mm) are fragile and will snap instantly if forced too hard into a cut. 1. Increase RPM Small bits need higher RPMs to achieve the same 'surface speed' as large bits. Aim for 20,000+ RPM. 2. Shallow Passes Never cut deeper than half the diameter of the bit (e.g., 1.5mm for a 3mm bit). 3. Higher Feedrates Contrary to intuition, moving too slowly can cause heat buildup which weakens the bit. Keep the bit moving to clear chips. 4. Ramp and Lead-In Never 'plunge' straight down into the material. Use a 'Ramp' entry in your CAM software to ease the bit into the cut.
